Unable to detect printer or print command goes to scanner instead of printer
If you have an all-in-one printer (with both printer and scanner), make sure that you select the printer when printing. To avoid confusion, rename your printer or scanner. The next time you print, you can more easily identify which device is the printer in the Select Printer pop-up menu.
Not all printers have the option to create borderless prints. Check the documentation of your printer or review the following steps to see if borderless printing is supported. In Photoshop Elements Editor (PSE), launch the Print dialog from File > Print, and then select your printer.
Hi tbrewton, The CanoScan 8400F is not compatible with the Mac OS X 10.9.2 (Mavericks) operating system; for a listing of our current model scanners that are compatible with the Mac OS X Mavericks operating system, please click on the links below. Oct 24, 2012 My Canoscan 5600F and Mountain Lion refuse to work together. Had no problem with Snow Leopard. Tried to download software for 10.8, without result. This is a different driver to that used by Image Capture, which is obtained via the Apple Software Update servers. Assuming you upgraded this Mac to 10.8 from 10.6 with the previous version.

How to change and customize print size for your prints
- Choose File > Print.
- Select Custom from the Select Print Size pop-up menu.
- In the dialog box that opens, enter a custom value for your print size. You can access this same dialog by clicking More Options in the Print dialog box.
- If you want to choose your customized size before launching the print dialog, then choose Image > Resize > Image size. Alternately, press Alt + Ctrl/Cmd + I, and then adjust the size.
Image is cropped/cut off from sides when printed
Every camera has a default aspect ratio or ratio of height to width with which images are taken.
For example: If your print size is 4x6 (3:2 ratio) and your image size is 5x7 (7:5 ratio), the ratios are not the same. When you print with Photoshop Elements and have Crop To Fit selected, your image is cropped on its longer edge (equally on each side).
Do one of the following:
![Driver Driver](/uploads/1/2/6/3/126348843/416328312.jpg)
- Use the Crop tool in Photoshop Elements Editor and select the exact ratio you intend to print with. Crop out the unwanted or less important parts of image.
- Deselect Crop To Fit.
- Choose File > Print, and then select Custom from the Select Print Size pop-up menu to open the following dialog box.
- Select Scale To Fit Media. Click Apply or OK to apply this change.Note: When you use this option and your image and the paper selected are of different ratio, then your image could be cropped. Ensure that you have deselected Crop To Fit on the main Print dialog box.
ICC profile errors (for example, ICC profile not found, ICC profile is corrupted or not matched)
Most ICC profiles are installed while you install Printer drivers. However, when ICC profiles are missing or corrupted, you can download ICC profiles from the manufacturer’s website.
Install ICC profile on WIN | Install ICC profile on Mas OS |
Note: If you do not see the Install Profile selection, you likely do not have the file unzipped properly. Copy and paste the profile to the following folder: C:WindowsSystem32spooldriverscolor |
/library/ColorSync/Profiles. Note: On a Mac OS running LION (10.7) or Mac running Mountain Lion (10.8), the /library/ColorSync/profiles could be locked by default. If it's locked, it can only be unlocked by an admin. |
Restart Photoshop Elements, and the profile is ready for use.
Photo package doesn't fill the entire print area, or there's white space within the print zone?
Use Crop To Fit to force each photo to fill the entire print area. This option scales the photo to fill an entire picture package print zone. It doesn't print portions of the photo that do not fit in the print zone.
Print Preview screen shows no gaps between images, or shows gaps, but does not print the same. Or, a vertical black line appears in print preview, but does not print.
This issue can be minimized with a higher resolution display, but could always be present for certain layouts. The black line doesn't print.
Caption, Date, and Filename information is cut off when chosen to print with the photo
Text for each photo is truncated if it exceeds the width of the image. Also, in some cases, the text in the preview and the printed page can differ slightly. Make sure that borderless printing is not turned on in your printer settings. Borderless printing scales the entire print area larger, creating a mismatch between the caption placement (if selected) and the printed output.
Caption, Date, and Filename information doesn't automatically rotate when the image is rotated in the layout
The metadata printed with the photo always appears in the same position on the page, regardless of the orientation of the photo associated with it.
Controls for the Epson printer Easy Print Module don't appear in the Print dialog box
The Epson EasyPrint Module has controls for borderless printing, media type, paper size, and paper orientation. To see them in the Print dialog box, be sure to install the latest version of your printer’s software. Visit the Epson EasyPrint website for details. For Japanese versions, see http://www.epson.jp/kantanprint/.
When you use one of the embedded Easy Print Module printer controls, the ink color setting resets to Color
Install the latest version of your printer’s software to get the most up-to-date support. Visit the Epson EasyPrint website for details. For Japanese versions, see http://www.epson.jp/kantanprint/.
Automatic adjustments that the printer driver offers for fixing red eye and contrast, and for enhancing digital flash don't work in Photoshop Elements
Printer driver adjustments are not supported when images have to be scaled to a different size on printout. Use the Photoshop Elements Editor for those adjustments.
Crop marks don't appear on photos that fill the entire page
Crop marks appear only if the image is smaller than the printable area.
When I select CanoScan 8400F in the Photo Downloader, I see a “Connecting to Device…Wait” message, but nothing happens. Why is that?
Click the Scan Gear icon in the taskbar to bring it to the front. Don't use the Photo Downloader to access your scanner. Choose File > Get Photos > From Scanner in the Photoshop Elements Organizer instead.

Tried to use this hint with my Canoscan N 650U scanner.
I installed the TWAIN SANE packages a few days ago and used Sane scanner frontend 1.2b as a GUI. This works okay, but I dont like the frontend and would like to be able to use Image Capture.
Fore some reason I couldn't find it with Gimp either.
Could anyone help me out on this?

The big news in this post is that TWAIN SANE was upgraded for compatibility with 10.4, it wasn't compatible last time I checked (a couple of weeks ago).
I had mixed results with TWAIN SANE under 10.3.8 with an old Epson 636 scanner, I could not get reliable scans under apps like Acrobat.
Note that 3rd party vendors have some really great drivers for older scanners, I particularly recommend Lasersoft <http://www.silverfast.com> for their excellent Silverfast software, it's cheap too. They even support old SCSI scanners, high end stuff like drum scanners, and digital cameras.

I followed the instructions, and needing help to get my HP PSC 1210 to work(when it works). HP's scan program is terrible. I added this to the SANE prefs.
# HP PSC 1210
usb 0X03F0 0X2F1
I'm using Tiger if that helps

I'm now having the same problem. Since I upgraded to Tiger, I cannot get my HP PSC 1210 to scan, even with the SANE bits that were supposed to help. Did you ever solve your problem?
I have also had some mixed results with the TWAIN SANE, mostly it has crashed, leaving the program doing the actual scanning (Photoshop or Image Capture) unresponsive. I made a small GUI wrapper to the scanimage program that's included in the SANE backend. The program works fine with my Artec e-48+ scanner and if you would like to try it for yours, you can find it at

It works with my Intel iMac and an HP ScanJet 4070 scanner, thanks for the heads up! =)
Great! Thanks. I got SANE to work with my Canon CanoScan N670U.
Check this page to see if your scanner is supported http://www.sane-project.org/sane-supported-devices.html. Get the name of the backend that works with your scanner. My Canon scanner uses a Plustek backend.
I got the packages you need to install from http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/.
I installed the packages in the following order: first libusb.pkg, then sane-backends.pkg, then SANE-Preference-Pane.pkg and finally TWAIN-SANE-Interface.pkg. I then rebooted (don't know if this is necessary).
In System Preferences go to SANE and choose the backend you identified earlier as working with your scanner. Choose configure. Look for a line with just [usb]. Add the vendor-id & product-id to that line. e.g. [usb] 0x04A9 0x220D . Now close the preference pane.
Open Image Capture, and your scanner should be recognized :^) One funny quirk though with the SANE interface, the overview (preview) did not work until I went into options and adjusted the change overview scan resolution slider (only had to do this once). Now everything works great and I haven't experienced any crashes.

Thanks a lot for the information. We just received a bunch of 'old' Canon scanners. The CanoScan n1220u to be precise. And the Sane twain backend works perfectly in Snow Leopard with the iMage Capture built in scanning interface.
Heritage Regional Hight School is very grateful.

Yes, thanks a lot for the information.
This is a talented Acquisition Framework for Java Platform available I've used before. It has common Api for Sane as well as for Twain interfaces.
